CHOREOGRAPHY

The dance itself is a complex as three separate choreographies are presented on stage:- the mask dancers(jujus), their captain (kam) and the people (human beings). The dance patterns of the mask dancers as the case may be with the Oku Juju Dance Yaounde and other modern juju ballet dances are particular clear-cut and electrifying. Their spectacular display draws the attention of any onlooker.

The dancing patterns are coordinated by the principal or the lead dancer (kam). The kam has a mastery of the whole choreography as well as the music. He commands and introduces the dancing styles one after the other. His spectacular display and co-ordination adds vigour to every presentation and makes the show very interesting and thrilling to watch.

The rest of the dancing team is made up of the other jujus which represent humans, animals as well as extra-terrestrial beings. This include the ngon (young woman), buffalo, lion, dragon, phantoms, elephant, birds such as the Turacco bannermani which is endemic to the Kilum mountain region Most often in a typical Oku traditional line up the last dancer represents one of the strongest forest animal e.g. elephant, buffalo or dracula. The modern juju dance such as the Yaounde juju dance still respect this line up. This line up of course shows the strong attachment and linkage between the Oku people, the environment and the extra-terrestrial or spiritual world.

On the other hand, feather mask jujus represent the ornithological diversity of the Oku mountain forest, except for the running juju (kekumeshinghene) with its dreadlocks. In a typical Oku line up, the captain or the kam is also a farther mask. However, the modern juju dances as the case may be of the Oku juju Dance Yaounde has adopted the dreadlocks rasta mask dancer as the captain.
